Welcome Guest

2010 National 12 Bell Eliminator at Shoreditch

Shoreditch

The Eliminator being held at St. Leonard's Shoreditch is hosted by the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths and whilst the format will be reassuringly familiar to those who have entered the competition before please don't hesitate to call or email George Unsworth on 07736 616662 / gu202@cam.ac.uk if you have any questions and she'll try to help.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Practices

You should by now have had confirmation of your practice slot. If you're coming from Liverpool Street station, turn left from your platform, take the escalator up to street level, turn left onto Bishopsgate and walk for 10 minutes until you see the spire of St. Leonard's on the right hand side of the road. If you're coming by car there is no congestion charge at weekends and metre parking on Saturdays is free of charge around Calvert Avenue/Arnold Circus but not everywhere else. (Please check very carefully as parking restrictions vary street by street.) Oddly, you do have to pay on Sundays though as the nearby Brick Lane market operates then. If you're looking for a post-practice curry house, however, Brick Lane is your best bet as there are plenty to choose from!

As you know, you are only allowed a 90 minute slot for practice. You will be met at the Tower by a keyholder who will make sure that the sound control is left as it will be for the competition itself (unless there are circumstances beyond our control). A donation of £1 per rope would be much appreciated. There are loos in the church (through the double doors, second door on the right and up to the first floor). Please make sure you leave the bells as you find them.

Eliminator

The schedule for the day is:
0930 Church open
1030 Test ring for judges
1100 Draw in the church
1130 First team starts
1430 Last team starts
The results will take place in the church probably between 1630 and 1700.

The Bells and Judging Position

There will be an electronic feed set up for the judges on the day of the competition. Their room is next to the gents toilet on the first floor.

Drink and Food

The local headquarters pub for the day will be The Electricity Showrooms which is open from 1200. It is a big pub with lots of space, some reasonable beer (Courage Directors) and reasonably priced food. Cross diagonally over the traffic lights immediately outside the church and head down Old Street for a couple of hundred yards, and it's on the corner. The address is 39a Hoxton Square, N1 6NN (tel: 020 7739 3939)
Bacon butties, toast, tea and coffee will be available in the church at ringers' prices from 0930 and sandwich/pudding lunches from 1230. You need to pre-order by filling in this form and sending it in to George before 22nd March, 2010.

Children

There isn't a crèche at the church, but children of all ages will be very welcome. Please contact George if there's anything you'd find it useful to know in advance.

Disabled Parking Access

A few parking spaces are available in the church for those with limited mobility. Please contact George Unsworth on 07736 616662 with your vehicle registration number to reserve a space. Please note that such spaces are strictly available on a 'first in, last out' basis.

Post-competition Pub

There will be a Social Event at the Walrus and Carpenter in the evening for all those who have travelled to London for the competition. It is sited on the junction of Lower Thames Street and Monument Street (i.e. across the road and a little to the right from St Magnus church) and 1 minute's walk from Monument tube station and Monument bus stop. It serves a wide selection of real ales, soft drink and coffee and food from its wide menu will be available until 7:30pm. The bars will remain open until 11pm. The entire venue, which consists of a ground floor bar, upstairs dining room and bar, basement wine bar and (weather permitting) pavement drinking and smoking area, has been booked for our private use. From Shoreditch take a bus (no. 35, 47, 48 or 149 towards Catford, Clapham or London Bridge) from Stop N outside the Crowne Plaza to Monument station. Buses run every 2 - 7 minutes and the ride takes 13 minutes or so.

The teams drawn at Shoreditch are:
St Paul's Cathedral
